Construction underway on WHCC gym and wellness complex
Construction is now underway on a $10 million project on the campus of West Hills College Coalinga that will renovate the college gymnasium and build a new 10,000 square foot wellness center.
Members of the West Hills Community College District Board of Trustees toured the facility last month prior to their regular board meeting. During the tour, they had a chance to visit the inside of the gym, which is being stripped of its more than 50-year-old floor.
Dr. Willard Lewallen, president of WHCC, told the trustees that the gym will have a new floor, bleachers and competition basketball hoops. It will also get a new Serban sound system and lighting.
Both men’s and women’s locker rooms are being gutted and refurbished and new staff offices and locker rooms are being built. The old weight room will become a dance studio and a new weight room is being built.
Lewallen said that a live camera will soon be installed on the construction site that will allow local residents to watch construction progress in real time via the web.
No major problems have been encountered, according to Lewallen, but workers did discover an abandoned water line and a sewer line had to be rerouted.
Drainage for the project area will be to the north of the campus across Cambridge Ave.
Lewallen also updated trustees on a project underway on the college rodeo grounds on Gayle Ave. Lights are currently being installed and should be ready for the college’s annual spring rodeo, which will be held March 27th and 28th.
