Faculty Preparation Program Now Offered Online

by Susan Hawksworth

Community college instructors can now enhance their teaching skills through an online certificate program offered by the Division of Continuing & Global Education at California State University, Fresno.

The Certificate in Community College Faculty Preparation (CCFP) program provides critical coursework and teaching experience for current and future community college faculty. The program is designed for graduate students, those with master’s degrees, and current community college instructors who wish to enhance their pedagogical knowledge and skills to advance on the pay scale.

The certificate program consists of four online courses and a sponsored experience, for a total of 12 units of postgraduate credit. Those not wishing to earn the certificate may take individual courses: The Community College as an Institution; The Community College Student; Theory and Practice: Effective Teaching and Classroom Communication Strategies; and Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment at the Community College.

“When I first heard of the Community College Faculty Preparation program being offered at Fresno State, I jumped at the opportunity to learn more about the community college system and to become a more effective teacher,” said Rebecca Nelson, a business instructor at Fresno City College and graduate of the CCFP program.

“I found the courses to be insightful, as the program offers the opportunity to learn new teaching strategies and to deal with the changing needs of the college students. It also brought a greater understanding of my relationship to the community college system,” she noted.

The two-unit course, The Community College Student, begins October 25. Theory and Practice will start on January 24, 2009 and Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment is scheduled for March 21, 2009.
