Things will not be the same around West Hills without the 10 people who recently took the early retirement option and have left us (for pictures of retirement celebrations and a slide show that was shown the night of the retirement dinner, visit KodakGallery.com/westhillscollege). We’ll miss each and every one of them and we’ll have to all pitch in to help fill the void. That will take some serious leadership and teamwork because it’s a big void.
A recent League for Innovation in the Community College article hit on this subject. It reviews a book, Leading by Listening: Lessons From a Maestro, that talks about gaining insight into leadership through the interactions between conductor and orchestra.
The article talks about the conductor working with the orchestra to get every part just right and then, when the conductor steps away, the orchestra still gets it right. The message is that leadership and training are essential and if each and every person does their job well, the organization runs smoothly.
